Abstract

Objective: To determine the preventative effect of a 2-year pilot sealant program on tooth caries in Laos children.

Methods: School children for a primary school at Vientiane in Laos were selected as the experimental group for the pilot sealant program. They underwent sealing for their permanent teeth. The control group school children were from other schools in Laos who did not undergo sealing for their permanent teeth.

Results: Based on the number of decayed, missing, and filled permanent tooth index, the prevention effect was found to be 63.1% in 3rd grade, 37.9% in 4th grade, and 36.0% in 5th grade Based on decayed, missing, and filled permanent tooth surface index, the prevention effect was found to be 74.1% in 3rd grade, 49.9% in 4th grade, and 27.1% in 5th grade (p£¼0.05).

Conclusion: Sealant program was found to be effective in decreasing the prevalence of tooth caries in Laos children. Therefore, such program should be extended to all Laos primary schools.
